Some of the known drugs that might cause magnesium loss include:

  1. Platinol®, a Cisplatin, is known to cause magnesium loss3

  2. Proleukin® Aldesleukin4

  3. Carboplatins5 including Paraplatin® or any of the generic forms

    Eating a wide variey of green vegetables such as spinach as well as legumes (beans and peas), nuts and seeds, whole grains will help you meet your daily dietary need for magnesium.6

  1. What if you cannot increase your magnesium enough through your diet?
    Ask your physician or pharmacist about a magnesium supplement. A 14 month randomized trial shows that magnesium supplements are of considerable benefit and show no harmful effects in patients receiving cisplatin treatment. It is suggested that magnesium supplements should be a routine part of the treatment regime, and that these should comprise of both i.v. supplements during treatment and oral supplements between courses.7
